Biotrickling filters contain an inert substrate on which the microorganisms grow instead of the organic substrate used in conventional biofilters. The biofilm can biodegrade organic and inorganic compounds under aerobic conditions and transform them into non-harmful and not perceptible compounds, such as carbon dioxide and water.

In contrast to conventional biofilters, biotrickling filters achieve high removal rates regardless of the stream load and a significantly lower footprint. The inert packing material ensures a long service life without needing renewal due to decomposition from the pollutants or their oxidation metabolites.
